“AgriHoods” ~ Farm to Table Neighborhoods.
Agrihoods are a new type of neighborhood that brings farm-to-table living right to your front door. These neighborhoods are not being built around a golf course or pools but around working farms that are maintained by professional farm hands. These new communities are developed based on designs and values that benefit the principals of environmental sustainability from organic farming to minimal land disturbances with large areas of undeveloped green spaces.
CBS Sunday Morning (click to watch video) did a bit on Serenbe which is just outside of Atlanta Georgia. Serenbe is a community of 200 homes on 100 acres and at its center is 25 acres set aside for agriculture.
Along with the benefits of the local fresh foods markets, these neighborhoods provide a sustainable and healthy outdoor lifestyle. The homes are surrounded by parks and open spaces with hiking trails and bike paths. The larger Agrihoods offer villages with restaurants, storefronts, markets, community halls and activities.
Agrihoods are popping up all over the United States.
- The Cannery near Sacramento has a 7.5 acre farm.
- Prairie Crossing just outside of Chicago is anchored by a 100 acre farm.
- Willowsford is by Washington, D.C. with 4,000 acres and has 300 acres set aside for fruits, vegetables, chickens an goats.
Here is a list of 12 Agrihoods across the United states that are taking farm-to-table homes mainstream.
