Airlines Could Be GREEN With Standby's.

Airlines Could Be GREEN With Standby’s.

Do you have a family emergency, a funeral, retiree with free time or can travel any day of the week?

Do you think the airlines would like to have full flights seven days a week?

Lately I have noticed that that many flights are not fully booked. Why not sell those seats at discounted standby rates. The airlines would benefit the public would benefit, and you would maximize the use of the plane that would in theory minimize wasted fuel and resources.

Let’s look at this.

You can fly from NYC to Florida round trip for under $250 round trip. So it stands to reason if a flight from NYC to somewhere on the east coast should be comparably within reason, every airport has different costs.

Now let say a day or two before the flight is to leave there are ten empty seats. Does it stand to reason to sell those ticket as standby tickets at $125 each way. If the seats are not paid by full price holders, then you can be standby. Even the day of the flight this does not happen. Every airline company policy is different but the basic rule of thumb is that you pay the designated full rate and then if you want you change flights for a nominal fee, this is what is called standby for the public.

For example to fly from NYC to Savannah, Georgia, for a flight that leaves today is $1200 (round trip). I called the airline to ask about a discount standby fare since you have ten empty seats, the answer was NO; the cost is still $1200.

I checked with the priceline.com and the price was still $1200, I checked a week from now and still $1200. But these flights have empty seats, why not fill them????

Needless to say I and my friends did not fly.

So the question is having ten empty seats is better than having them filled at $100-150 each way????

The average median household income in the United States is $46,326. For example there was an emergency and flying was the best way to get there it would cost a family of 3 $3600 to fly. Do you really think they are going to do it? What about the millions of retiree’s living on a budget, would you not think that they would take advantage of the discounted standby fares to visit relatives, friends and family.

What are the downsides of this??? I cannot see one.

What are the upsides?

Planes are maximized

Waste is minimized, that is being Green.

Providing a service to a sector of the public that would not usually fly.

Great Public Relations.
