Water a Renewable Source But Not Infinite.

Water a Renewable Source But Not Infinite.

The Water Cycle, Earth

You might think that there is abundance of usable water but out of the total global water supply only 2.5% is freshwater and 68% of that is in glaciers and ice caps.

The Earth’s Water Cycle provides a renewable source of fresh water but only to a limit. What will happen when we use more fresh water than the earth can provide? You can already see dramatic results like in the Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona areas where ground water levels have declines of between 300 to 500 feet.

Globally fresh water use statistics show that that about:-

  • 70% of our fresh water supply used by agriculture.
  • 20% for industry.
  • 10% for domestic use.

The average daily drinking water required per person is 2 to 4 liters (1 gallon = 3.79 liters). The average person needs 20 to 50 liters of water per day for daily chores.

Virtual Water Trade or Embodied Water refers to the amount of fresh water needed to create a product.

  • 1 apple uses 70 liters of water.
  • One cup of Coffee requires 140 liters to produce.
  • 1 Hamburger requires 2400 liters of water.
